It is a 40 minute drive and your introduction to the unique and breathtaking landscapes that the Faroe islands have to offer.
Once you have checked in to your hotel, we offer you a guided walking tour of our ancient city, through the
narrow cobbled streets, between traditional wooden houses with grass turf roofs, which date back many hundreds
of years. We will also take in the the old fortress, the marina and the peninsular known as Tinganes, where you will walk
through the iconic redwood, grass-roofed buildings of some the oldest parliament buildings in the world.
We will regale you with tales of ancient Viking customs and intriguing, sometimes gruesome ways in which Viking disagreements were settled.
After your tour, we will be happy to arrange a booking for you at one of the fine restaurants in Tórshavn and we would encourage you explore the local bars and cafés and invariably, live music to capture fully the true spirit of the smallest, coziest capital in the world.
A representative from Heimdal Tours will collect you from your hotel and we will drive firstly to the historic village of Kirkjubøur, the southernmost village on Streymoy and the country's most important historical site with the ruins of the Magnus Cathedral from around 1300, the Saint Olav's Church from 12th century and the old farmhouse Kirkjubøargarður fro
We will then drive to the beautiful village of Saksun with its natural amphitheatre of cliffs and stunning nature.
During low tides it is also possible to walk along the sandy beach to the ocean.
After exploring Saksun, our next stop is the village of Tjørnuvík, the most northerly village on Streymoy and now popular with surfers...yes you heard correctly...surfers!
Tjørnuvík also has one of the oldest Viking burial grounds where you can see the original burial stones. We usually take time here to enjoy our packed lunch whilst admiring the view of the "Giant and Hag" rock formations on the headland and telling you the legend behind the rocks.
We then take the stunning drive up and past the highest point on the Faroe Islands and descending into the beautiful and picturesque village of Gjógv. here we may also get the opportunity to take coffee and cake with the locals.
We will then take the scenic route back to your hotel, with plenty of photo opportunities on the way and we will regale you with some of the legends and myths that abound in this magical country.
By bus we will drive via the mountain road to Vestmanna where the excursion boat awaits. The boat sails along the popular bird cliffs and grottoes. If the weather allows it, the boat sails into a narrow strait, deep grottoes and close to the 600 m high wall, where thousands of seabirds breed.
On the tour we stop by the village of Leynar, where we can see handmade salmon stairs and one of the favorite beaches of the faroese people, and we make a stop in Kvívík, where explore the old Viking settlements. Departures every Thursday and Saturday 12:30.
